“Be where your feet are”

be where your feet areThis may be one of the best pieces of advice I’ve received in awhile.

Be where your feet are.

So simply stated, yet sometimes hard to put into action.
In daily actions, be where you are in that moment. Be present. Put the phone down, look people in the eye and listen to what they are saying. Be where you are when you’re working and actually do work while you’re working, don’t waste time diddy-dallying around when that time can be used for more meaningful tasks.
On a broader scale, be where you are at this point in your life. Stop looking for the next best thing. Be great and committed to where you are now. The right opportunities will present themselves, but you can’t always be searching for them. Professional opportunities are a little like love. People say you can’t always go looking for love, but it’ll fall on your lap when you least expect it. The same goes for professional opportunities. The right thing will come your way when the time is right, when you’re prepared for the next step.

I used this analogy of ‘being where your feet are’ for my track team preparing for the conference meet this weekend. Many of them will compete in multiple events over the next few days and it can be hard to lose focus on the event at hand. Focus on one jump, throw, race, or play at a time. Doing your best at each moment can only lead to success.
