T-Spine Mobility for Scoliosis

A few weeks ago, I was watching ActiveSpine’s Movement Matters video (click here for the original) and I was impressed with the thoracic spine mobilization they were demonstrating on a foam roller. I tested it out, felt great, but I had to put a little bit of a twist on it.

I have scoliosis with a right-left S curve and am always trying new mobilizations and exercises to counteract the curve and alleviate discomfort. Reaching the right hand across and resting it on the left hip counteracts the right rotation of the spine while the extension of the left arm adds length to the left side counteracting the extreme left lateral flexion of the spine. This should be a relaxed, easy mobilization. Don’t overdo the movement as there is no way to fix the curve.

As a former Division I track athlete and an overall active person, I never want to feel limited in my movements because of my scoliosis. Sometimes I do though, and it can be frustrating. What I have found is that the scoliosis gives me more discomfort the less active I am. I guess it will always motivate me to constantly stay active and fit! I want others with scoliosis to feel the same, empowered and able to do the activities they love. While I have plenty of training tips for everyone, one goal of this blog is to delve into scoliosis a little bit more to discover movements and tactics that help alleviate discomfort and enhance function.

Make it a great week!
